Crew Notes — Playback Operator + FOH Engineer
Playback Operator A/V Playback Tech

A/V Playback Tech runs Ableton + Console at FOH. Walk this through with FOH engineer at load-in.

  • Power: Both laptop AND interface plugged into power; lightning adapter connects interface to laptop.
  • Cable map (out of interface): XLR → mic input 1 · Line out 3+4 → Tracks (stereo) · Monitor L → autotuned mic signal.
  • Ableton: Sophia Stel full live set must be open. Tracks channel output set to 3/4. Audio I/O = Universal Audio Apollo Twin (⌘+, → Audio).
  • Console: Channel 1 only is in use for mic/autotune. Top knob sets Ch 1 send level — coordinate with FOH.
  • Headroom rule: Never let signal hit the top of the volume bar. Give FOH headroom — they bring it up downstream.
  • No other apps: Quit everything else on the laptop — especially Logic Pro (conflicts with Ableton/Console).
FOH Engineer Venue

All vocal FX live at FOH. Autotune is already on the Monitor L send from playback — don't tune again.

  • Vocal FX you handle: ~4 sec hall reverb + gentle compression. That's the package — leave delay/harmonies off unless asked.
  • Mic signal split: Input 1 = raw vocal · Monitor L = autotuned vocal (already processed). Blend to taste.
  • Mix priority: Vocals slightly more up front than typical band-mix balance — clarity over "sit in."
  • Soundcheck flow: EQ tracks (3+4) first, before involving Sophia. Then mic check.
  • Soundcheck songs: Everyone Falls Asleep → Taste → I Do or Molly in the Club. Be efficient — every extra song is wear on her voice.
⚠ ROLES — PLEASE NOTE: The artist's A/V Playback Tech operates Sophia's laptop at FOH for backing tracks and timed visuals only. The venue's FOH engineer is responsible for front-of-house mix. These are separate roles — please do not conflate them.

⚠ VISUALS (IF EQUIPPED): Sophia runs timed visuals from the FOH laptop via Ableton, synced to backing tracks. A long HDMI cable from FOH to projector/LED wall is required, or wireless display must be confirmed in advance. Screen must be operational at soundcheck.

⚠ HAZER: Atmospheric haze is vital to Sophia's show. Do not omit. Confirm availability when advancing.

SOUNDCHECK: 45 minutes minimum. Set: ~1 hour (timed to visuals — cannot be shortened).

Playback Operator Sophia (self)

Sophia self-operates Ableton + Console from a stage-left laptop table. Reference for venue staff if asked — do not touch the laptop without instruction.

  • Power: Both laptop AND interface plugged into power; lightning adapter connects interface to laptop.
  • Cable map (out of interface): XLR → mic input 1 · Line out 3+4 → Tracks (stereo) · Monitor L → autotuned mic signal.

⚠ LAPTOP TABLE: Sophia operates her own laptop (Ableton — backing tracks + timed visuals) from stage left. A table is required at stage left; offstage positioning is strongly preferred. Do not attempt to connect to or adjust the laptop without instruction.

⚠ VISUALS (IF EQUIPPED): If the venue has projection or LED wall capability, an HDMI cable from the stage left table to the projector/LED wall is required — or wireless display connectivity must be confirmed in advance.
